She went to the University of Alabama, and inspired by Sputnik, got a job at MSFC in 1963. Beginning with materials development for propulsion and vehicles engineering, she found enjoyment working with fellow physicists. She worked on that Saturn project, as well as biomedical technology for Skylab, and discusses the various personalities she met during her career. She would go on to serve as chief of the Physical Sciences branch, the supervisor of the engineering physics division, deputy of the space sciences lab, and in various other NASA roles. She discusses the LF experiment vehicle, and work with environmental technology. Since retirement, she has participated in farming, and local part-time work. She emphasizes the importance of persistence. He recalls the influence of the space race, Tom Swick Jr. novels, and model rocketry on his career choice, convincing him to get involved with design and engineering. He went to Delaware Tech, and earned a mechanical engineering degree. He was accepted at the Pratt Institute, studying industrial design and graduating in 1975. He then moved to Connecticut and worked in the field (especially on consumer products) for several years. He then proceeded to write automotive history for some time; research on the lunar rover program inspired him to spin into researching space history as well. As of the date of the interview, he was researching and developing a history of the development of the Saturn V's F-1 engine. Young discusses how he managed to publish his book on lunar and other interplanetary rovers-- and how the UAH Archives was involved with his research, as well as the value of history books as a resource or future projects. Young also briefly discusses the Russian Lunacod program, as well as his then-current book project. He concludes by discussing the value of the interview project itself, and by thanking the archives. Slight audio degradation and ringing is present due to the recording's age; it is especially notable at the end of the video. Following several relocations over the course of the war, the family would be split, then reunited in El Paso, Texas. The family would come to Huntsville in 1950, with Ludwig continuing to work under Wernher von Braun until 1956 (at which point he would work at various other companies). Axel began his college studies at the University of Alabama, but would move to Auburn for co-op opportunities, recieving his degree in aeronautical engineering in 1959, and joining Marshall in 1960 (in the Structures and Mechanics Laboratory). Axel recalls his early roles with the Apollo project, including working with the crew safety board, and performing structural analysis. Around 1966, he would transfer to the Technical Systems office, remaining for a few years- then joining the Central Systems engineering laboratory following a major MSFC reorganization (approximately in 1969), then working on engineering and experiments for Skylab. Following Skylab, he hit a "down period" until the Spacelab project, where he served as a structure systems engineer. Axel recounts his unique experiences with the latter in-depth, such as the experience of group collaboration on the projects' many components,and applying to be a payload operations director. He would go on to work on the Space Station project; following Challenger, he would move on to work as the chief engineer of Spacelab. Around 1989, he would be selected as the Space Station deputy chief engineer, and would also work in program development, as well as serving on the flight program directorate. Eventually, Axel would retire in 2004; he reflects that he wouldn't change anything about his career. He began work with the Chrysler Corporation, coming to Huntsville in 1958. He would begin working with the Army in 1960, starting by moving the Jupiter weapons system project to the Air Force. He would then work for the Saturn project, serving primarily as the business manager for the S1C phase of the project. After Saturn, he began working on a shuttle program; he would eventually be reassigned to the atmospheric cloud physics program, but returned to the shuttle program until approximately 1989. Following his work on the shuttle, he worked on the Advanced Launch Program with the Air Force; later, he would serve as the comptroller for MSFC, emphasizing the importance of consistency and communication. After retiring, he became active with the Marshall Retirement Association, lamenting the stagnation of both it and wider NASA programs. He went to the Air Force Institute of Technology, focusing on armament technology (technically graduating with an aero engineering master's) in 1955. After being released from the Air Force, he visited Redstone, and recieved a job in March of 1958. He was at first assigned to the Future Project Designs Branch of the S&M laboratory of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency. He worked on early Saturn developments, as well as the prospect of a lunar base, determining the ideal route for the Apollo craft, and further research into reaching Mars, transitioning into project management over time. He got involved with the Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle, and served as the project manager, but the program was canceled, and he would work on projects at Houston for some time. He would work on the technology transfer program before retiring in 1992. In his retirement, he has worked with the botanical gardens. He concludes by reflecting on the Apollo project, the lack of use of Saturn hardware, and frustration behind the contemporary space program. He was drafted into the Korean War, and was sent to Redstone in Spring of 1951, being assigned to the material laboratory. After his service, he continued work at Redstone in the same category of re-entry protection. In 1956, a large booster project began, utilizing Jupiter hardware, which would eventually develop into the Saturn system. Bob would serve as a project engineer on the Saturn 1/1B booster, and on Jupiter C, also serving as a liaison to JPL. He remained with ABMA as it converted to NASA, but would leave in 1963 to work for the Spacecraft company (alongside Olin King and others). He would stay with Spacecraft for approximately 4 years, then worked for Northrop. Bob discusses the company's time working on the MARS study contract, after which he would return to MSFC (around 1971) at the behest of Dr. Eberhard Rees, working in the Propulsion Vehicle Engineering Lab. He would move to the Shuttle office, and remain with the project through several launches. Bob discusses the various personnel he interacted with in this role. After his shuttle work, Bob would retire and do consulting work (spending some time at Thiokol and Rockwell, forming a firm with several other former coworkers). He would take over Thiokol's space operations group following the Challenger disaster, running into concerns against the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor project, but ultimately bringing the company into relative success. He concludes by emphasizing the importance of strengthening engineering. Bob states that the landing and arrival on the moon was one of the greatest moments of his life. After Saturn, Bob worked on Skylab (in the advanced life support group), where he worked on several unique items for the project, including Stirling-cycle refrigeration systems. He spent some time working with the Department of Energy, then returned to working on solar power at MSFC. Bob would continue into program development, then to managing corporate research. In 1990, he would assist in managing a hydrogen leak on the shuttle Columbia, then retired from NASA. He would work for SAIC for some time, then worked part-time at UAH, and contracted with the Department of Transportation. Bob also harbored an interest in computers, which would lead him to work with Microsoft in synchronizing video conference and PowerPoint presentations. Bob also spent some time with the Marshall Retirees association, and Charles indicates that Bob has been operating/uploading this series of interviews.
