He received a BS from the University of Tennessee in Agricultural Engineering. He worked for Ford Motor Company and the US Army before moving to Huntsville. He started working for Thiokol in 1959 as a Program Manager. He retired in 1995 when the Huntsville division closed down. Bill shared his knowledge of Thiokol. He spoke about the companies start in 1926, making sealants for gas tanks for the US military's aircraft in WWII, and working in Rocket Propulsion. He spoke about Thiokol starting work in rocketry in 1947 and working with solid propulsion rockets in 1949. Bill shared information about the TX-58, X-17, TX-33, XM-20 and TX 77. He shared information about the Hermes Motor, Falcon air-to-air missile, Minuteman motor development, Scout Vehicles, Little Joe, Caster 1, 2, and 4, and rocket motor configurations. He summarized by saying that over 2300 motors were produced for launch vehicles in Huntsville and that those motors assisted in the launching of satellites used for communication, weather, and geo-positioning. Title A name given to the resource Carl Powe Description An account of the resource Carl grew up in Hartsville, SC, and in 1957 recieved a BS in chemistry. He briefly worked in his hometown and was in the ROTC before joining the military, where he served as an ordnance officer in various nations. He retired from the military in 1977, and worked on refurbishing SRBs for several years before joining Thiokol, where he was to develop an companywide inegrated management system. He was also responsible for familiarizing management with computer literacy (especially the IBM COPICS system). He left the company due to a personal dispute, returned to a previous role, and retired in 1991 (although he continued to work for several years). After retiring, he wrote two books. He extolls the experience of working at Thiokol, in spite of some personality conflicts. He closes by discussing his family, and advising young people to select a job where they can meaningfully contribute. Title A name given to the resource Cecil Stokes Description An account of the resource Cecil was born in Anniston, AL, and his family moved frequently in his youth. He went to Auburn and graduated with a mechanical engineering degree in 1958. In interviewing, he found Thiokol very appealing for the passion of its employees. He provides a brief overview of Thiokol's contributions as excerpted from a formal paper. He began working at the division's Rocket Engineering department, starting as part of the Pershing team. Cecil would go on to serve in a support role for various projects, and served under various different groups for short periods, eventually landing in the Stress Nozzles group, then the Components Development group. He also worked on solving high-priority issues for the company. In addition to other various projects, he contributed to a techology transfer contract to Nissan in Japan. After conflicts with management, he recieved trained to become a chief of quality management at Thiokol's production plant, then worked on implementing the COPICS program which Carl Powe began. He continued to encounter various corporate management-level issues along his tenure. He stayed in proposal management for several years more than average, seeing a high success rate. Cecil also speaks on the continuation of the company's management club (in the for of the Huntsville Division Alumni Association), and the employees' involvement with the city at large. When he joined Thiokol, he worked as an engineer on the BOMAR program, as well as on the CASTOR program. He worked at the company for 37 years in total. Patty was born in Washington, DC, in 1946, and frequently moved in her youth. She worked on the Saturn I/IB project and around the nation, eventually settling at Thiokol in 1978. She worked in the chemistry building at first, and discusses her unique experiences there primary taking dictation and transcribing (eventually serving as the secretary for many prominent Thiokol employees). She also speaks on the quality of her experience at the company, and the post-Thiokol organization. The couple also discusses their personal relations and post-retirement activities. Title A name given to the resource Dr. Bob Glick Description An account of the resource Dr. Bob Glick was born January 26, 1934 in Ashland, Kentucky. He earned his BS in Engineering from Perdue University and started his PhD program there. He left the graduate program to join Thiokol in the Engineering Department. He worked in the Heat Transfer Group. The major issue he worked on was Combustion Instability. The major project addressed was the Castor II engine failure and how he worked with collegues to overcome the problem. During his time with Thiokol he was able to complete his PhD in Engineering. He left Thiokol to work for Cummings Engine Company. He was also a professor of Engineering at the University of Kansas. He returned to Thiokol and then transferred to the University of Dayton Research Institute. He ended his career with Tally. In 1992, he moved to the Utah division with several other employees; in 1995, he moved to work for Atlantic Research Corporation in Virginia, and continues to work in the propulsion industry, finding many common colleagues along the way. He majored in aerospace engineering at Auburn, graduating in 1971. He studied for his master's, then entered the workforce at Pratt and Whitney, working there from 1972-74. He first worked at Thiokol in the Engineering department, serving as a ballastician. He discusses the company's rising concern with combustion instability, and the experience of managing computer simulations to combat it. Dr. Lyon also spent 10 years assisting the ONS Navy office with ballistics sciences, where he had a variety of responsibilities, including community outreach. Eventually, he returned to Auburn and completed his master's in 1978. He would briefly teach a high school level course on rocket science, and continued to work in ballistic design for the Navy. He would return to Huntsville in 1987 and work for the Army's Propulsion Directorate at Redstone Arsenal, which enabled him to travel abroad frequently, and participate in international scientific events. He recieved a PhD from UAH after 2001, and enjoys playing and teaching the bagpipes.
