    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Lorenzo Morata’s interview describes his early work on the Saturn program and his role in developing the S-IVB stage’s propellant utilization system. After joining Douglas Aircraft Company in 1960, Morata transferred from the Delta program to Saturn, where he became involved in designing the electronics for a closed-loop system that optimized the mixture ratio of liquid oxygen (LOX) and liquid hydrogen (LH2) by continuously monitoring propellant levels and regulating engine flow. He explains that the system used long continuous capacitive probes inside the LOX and hydrogen tanks to measure propellant mass, providing real-time data that allowed the vehicle to consume nearly all available fuel and oxidizer while maximizing payload capacity. Morata details his work designing the inverter/converter, a power supply unit that converted battery power into the various AC and DC voltages needed to operate the propellant utilization electronics, and describes his involvement throughout the design, qualification, testing, and integration process. He notes that the S-IV/S-IVB continuous probe system represented a major advancement over earlier approaches, such as discrete level sensors, because it provided continuous measurements without the added complexity of multiple sensors and wiring. Morata also discusses how the system transmitted information to ground computers while remaining separate from the Instrument Unit’s guidance system, though engine cutoff commands could ultimately be coordinated through the vehicle’s control systems.
