He went on to work with Boeing, transferring to NASA in 1964. He worked in the QA lab for several years, then transferred to program development & worked on several studies. He would become program manager of the LAGEOS project in 1974, remaining until 1976, and recalling his involvement with the program and some of its challenges. Following this, he became chairman of the Source Selection Committee for a tethered satellite system; then served as resident manager in Germany for Spacelab, in which he experienced the diferent methodologies of European space agencies. Following Spacelab, he would retire in August 1981. He enrolled at Auburn for mechanical engineering, with particular interest in mechanical drawing. However, a change of heart led him to transfer to West Alabama University to study journalism. He graduated with a journalism major and history minor in summer 1956, writing for the school newspaper along the way. He took an interim position in advertising with Ingles Industries, then applied to the Huntsville Times, where he would become a cub reporter in March 1957. Bob and Charles deviate briefly to discuss Huntsville figure Colonel Knickerson; his court martial illustrated how important the city would be as a source of news to Bob. He then segues into discussing space history, as well as his work "stringing" (working off-hours) in conjunction with his work at the Times. In 1962, he would get become the paper's direct correspondent for Redstone Arsenal-related news, which he marks as a signficant part of his career, and provides multiple stories from. After about 4 years as the space correspondent, he would transition into becoming the Sunday issue editor; in 1970, he would begin doing yearly major space pieces, cowriting for the editorial page. In 1974 (at age 40), he would become the managing editor; he would remain in this role for 19 years. Uniquely, Bob was selected to partake in a journalistic interchange with China; he also was partly involved in activities with the Chamber of Commerce. Bob would author multiple books, including a space humor book ("A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon"), a book on Von Braun's witticisms, a second humor book ("The Light Stuff") which would become part of the 1982 World's Fair in conjunction with the US Space and Rocket Center, and a more complete and balanced book on Von Braun (which ran into issues with the publisher-to-be Smithsonian Books, but found release with the Naval Institute Press as "Dr. Space: The Life of Werner Von Braun"). After high school, he would join the Navy, then attend school at Auburn, recieving an electrical engineering BS, then earning a master's in the same from Georgia Tech. Following school, he went to work at the Naval Research Station in Panama City. Brooks would then begin work in Huntsville in 1953, beginning with development inspection, then shortly joining guidance and control and working on the Redstone program (especially control simulations). He continued to work on Jupiter (where he took on more guidance-specific work), as well as on the Explorer program. In 1960, he would become a charter member of the MSFC, as the director of the Guidance and Control division. He would maintain this role in the early stages of the Saturn project, but would move on to become the Astrionics laboratory director (from around 1968). Brooks then goes on to discuss some of the challenges he faced in this role while developing Skylab maneuvering/control systems, as well as the decision to deorbit the station. He also discusses contributions to the Space Shuttle, and supporting various experiments. Brooks retired in November of 1981, but remained involved with the space program. After brief involvement in military work with Teledyne-Brown, he would begin work at Control Dynamics in 1984, which he was still involved with at the time of the interview. Brooks reflects positively on his career & experience with many different groups as a result of his work, and discusses his time with the Marshall Retiree's Association. He went to the University of New Hampshire (around September 1945), graduating for electrical engineering in 1949. He would be drafted in late 1950, becoming part of the SMP program in July '51 and reporting to Redstone Arsenal. He would begin work under Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger and Dr. Menteufel; after his drafted tenure ended, he continued his work at the GS9 level. He would be reorganized into the Senior Branch of the Astrionics lab, and around 1971, he would move to the Space Sciences lab, working on various managerial projects into 1973, eventually becoming a deputy division chief. He juggled his work with earning a master's and PhD, completing the latter in 1977. After gaining his PhD, Carl would be moved to work on the Space Telescope and its instrumentation (which he estimated as a 7 to 8 year process). After this, he would move on to the AC SAF program, later known as Chandra (again being involved with instrumentation). He would retire in 1997, having been in some capacity employed for 55 years at his own estimate. Since retiring, Carl spent time with his grandchildren, and had spent time learning about U.S. presidents. He emphasizes the importance of computer literacy and Spanish. Inspired by her upbringing, Carolyn went to FSU and studied astronautical engineering, doing a co-op at MSFC in the Materials division (beginning in 1964). She participated in early Saturn V testing, and in 1967 graduated and became a full-time employee in the same lab. She would be partially involved with research, such as analyzing metals in weightlessness. However, she found more interest in creating experimental hardware, and also applied to the astronaut corps, to which she became a finalist (the experience of which revealed the complexitudes of the different groups involved in NASA). She would be tranferred into the chief engineers' office, and enjoyed the process of reconciling the many different systems, especially while working on Spacelab. Carolyn also attended UAH in the late 70s for industrial & systems engineering. Following her work as a chief engineer, she would become the payload operations director for Skylab, and eventually progressed to working at NASA headquarters as a division director, although she quickly returned to MSFC, working as a laboratory director, and in various other positions, including deputy and acting center director. Carolyn would retire from NASA in January 2001, but would continue working with SpaceHab. She closes by emphasizing the importance of continued learning through experience. He would be picked up for work at Marshall, and in his military tenure he was stationed at a missile site near Boston. On returning to Marshall he would be assigned to the Components Test Laboratory, designing control test equipment from 1963 to '68. Charles would also briefly work at the Kennedy Space Center early in 1968 following a call for volunteers to prepare the first Saturn V rockets-- his work there would take him to the Astrionics lab, and he would work on launch support for the designs which he worked on. He also worked on the LRV "Quick Response Team" & dealt with several unique issues. Following the LRV work, (around 1973) he would participate in SRB systems integration for the space shuttle, eventually becoming the chief for that position, and participating in 61 launches (including STS-4 and the Challenger disaster, which he discusses in closer detail). After Challenger, Charles would become the Director of Systems Safety and Reliability, a role which he would retain for his last 7 years of employment (1987-94).
