She majored in applied manufacturing engineering. She grew up during the space age and she recalls watching rocket launches in class. When she was ready to go to college, she chose to major in space sciences at Florida Institute of Technology. She later changed her major to physics from Georgia State University. She did not plan to go to graduate school at first but later completed her masters degree in physics at The University of Alabama in Huntsville when she got a graduate Co-Op internship at NASA. Due to her Co-Op, when she finished her masters degree, she started at NASA as a full time employee as a researcher. She worked on chromospheric data and data from Solar Dynamics Observatory that launched in 2010. She also looked at coronal data at high temperatures. In 2020, she became the assistant manager of the Heliophysics and Planetary Science Branch. She discusses how she started in this position and what is required of the position. She now organizes journal clubs and participates space science seminar series. She also focuses on outreach and education alongside her managerial roles. She also has an interested in education that started when she worked at the Fernbank Science Center as a teenager. She does outreach to young individuals as a way to give back to the individuals who inspired her growing up. She discusses the issues she encountered as a woman in STEM. She states that when she started in the industry in 1989, there were few woman engineers. Her experience as a woman in a male dominated field changed over time as more women entered the field. She emphasizes that continuing to learn about your field after graduating school and learning about other fields that interface with your field is crucial. She also states communication is a must today for the workforce. She went to the University of Alabama, and inspired by Sputnik, got a job at MSFC in 1963. Beginning with materials development for propulsion and vehicles engineering, she found enjoyment working with fellow physicists. She worked on that Saturn project, as well as biomedical technology for Skylab, and discusses the various personalities she met during her career. She would go on to serve as chief of the Physical Sciences branch, the supervisor of the engineering physics division, deputy of the space sciences lab, and in various other NASA roles. He recalls the influence of the space race, Tom Swick Jr. novels, and model rocketry on his career choice, convincing him to get involved with design and engineering. He went to Delaware Tech, and earned a mechanical engineering degree. He was accepted at the Pratt Institute, studying industrial design and graduating in 1975. He then moved to Connecticut and worked in the field (especially on consumer products) for several years. He then proceeded to write automotive history for some time; research on the lunar rover program inspired him to spin into researching space history as well. As of the date of the interview, he was researching and developing a history of the development of the Saturn V's F-1 engine. Young discusses how he managed to publish his book on lunar and other interplanetary rovers-- and how the UAH Archives was involved with his research, as well as the value of history books as a resource or future projects. Young also briefly discusses the Russian Lunacod program, as well as his then-current book project. He concludes by discussing the value of the interview project itself, and by thanking the archives. The family would come to Huntsville in 1950, with Ludwig continuing to work under Wernher von Braun until 1956 (at which point he would work at various other companies). Axel began his college studies at the University of Alabama, but would move to Auburn for co-op opportunities, recieving his degree in aeronautical engineering in 1959, and joining Marshall in 1960 (in the Structures and Mechanics Laboratory). Axel recalls his early roles with the Apollo project, including working with the crew safety board, and performing structural analysis. Around 1966, he would transfer to the Technical Systems office, remaining for a few years- then joining the Central Systems engineering laboratory following a major MSFC reorganization (approximately in 1969), then working on engineering and experiments for Skylab. Following Skylab, he hit a "down period" until the Spacelab project, where he served as a structure systems engineer. Axel recounts his unique experiences with the latter in-depth, such as the experience of group collaboration on the projects' many components,and applying to be a payload operations director. He would go on to work on the Space Station project; following Challenger, he would move on to work as the chief engineer of Spacelab. Around 1989, he would be selected as the Space Station deputy chief engineer, and would also work in program development, as well as serving on the flight program directorate. Eventually, Axel would retire in 2004; he reflects that he wouldn't change anything about his career.
